Today, during the 50th anniversary week of the launch of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) will sit down with NBC’s Brian Williams to discuss his views on poverty and attempt to realign himself as a supporter of low-income families. The next morning on Friday, January 10, the Half in Ten campaign, a project of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, will host a press call featuring poverty experts from Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin reacting to Rep. Ryan’s comments.
Speakers on the call will discuss Rep. Ryan’s vision for fighting poverty that lies in stark contrast to budgets he also authored that would make extreme cuts in the social safety net laid down by the War on Poverty. They will also discuss the release of a new poll that unpacks American attitudes about low-wage work, economic opportunity, and the social safety net, and address whether the War on Poverty was a success.
