Tax Day: Accept Our Tax Dollars for BadgerCare

Tax rebate to the citizens of Wisconsin for BadgerCare, waiting on the Governor’s signature

April 15th, Tax day. Wisconsinites are filing their taxes and being responsible. Which is why Citizen Action of Wisconsin, State Representative JoCasta Zamarripa and Wisconsin Jobs Now held a media event today calling on Governor Walker to also be responsible and accept the billions in federal funds available for BadgerCare.

These federal funds represent tax dollars that Wisconsinites have already paid, funds that could go to fellow citizens in the state to improve and strengthen the health system and reduce the cost of health coverage for thousands. But instead by rejecting these federal funds for BadgerCare Walker is irresponsibly sending our tax dollars to other states.

Recent research released by Citizen Action of Wisconsin shows that Wisconsinites who are being denied BadgerCare will have to pay $26 million per year in higher deductibles if they sign up for private plans. This is only the tip of the iceberg, as it does not include other additional out of pocket costs. Additional research shows that rejecting federal funds for BadgerCare is a large reason why Wisconsinites are paying more for private health insurance than other states.

“Taxes are an investment in our democracy, to ensure it is strong and equitable,” said Robert Kraig, Executive Director of Citizen Action of Wisconsin. “These federal tax dollars are an investment in the health of our citizens and the stability of the health market. By irresponsibly refusing these federal funds for BadgerCare, Walker is committing fiscal malpractice.”
