Milwaukee County Resolution to Stop Family Separation

On Tuesday, July 10, 2018, Citizen Action of Wisconsin/Acción Ciudadana de Wisconsin co-op member and County Supervisor Sylvia Ortiz-Velez, along with County Chris Abele and several allies announced their support for a resolution opposing the Trump Administration’s “zero tolerance” policy. The resolution calls on the Administration to abide by the Flores Settlement Agreement, a longstanding Supreme Court decision that details criteria regarding the treatment of immigrant children in federal detention.

Thanking Katie Dunn

By: Candice Owley, President, WI Federation of Nurses & Health Professionals and Robert Kraig, Executive Director, Citizen Action of Wisconsin

Our first Health Care Co-op organizer, Katie Dunn, has decided to leave her position. We wish Katie nothing but the very best. While she has decided to take a different direction, the important work we all began together last year will continue.

We want to express our tremendous gratitude to Katie for the excellent work she did over the past 14 months to establish the Health Care for All Organizing Co-op as a great vehicle in the fight to make health care a fundamental human right. Katie understood the importance of putting the focus on patients and exposing the terrible consequences of the all consuming profit motive in health care. Whether it was standing up to protect the ACA, pushing for BadgerCare as a public option, taking on the cost of drugs, or the battle with the Ascension hospital chain to keep St. Joe’s Hospital, Katie was there organizing the fight.

We want to let you know in this time of transition that we remain strongly committed to continuing to work with each of you to build the Health Care for All Co-op into the leading edge of the health care transformation we all so desperately need.

Now more than ever, as we move into a critical election season, we are reaffirming our commitment to the right to health care for everyone in our community.  Wisconsin Federation of Nurses & Health Professionals and Citizen Action of Wisconsin are dedicated to continuing this great partnership and working with each of you to create the health care system the people of Wisconsin need and deserve.

Because of the work of each of you, every major Democratic candidate for Governor is running on our BadgerCare Public Option plan, and dozens of state legislative candidates have signed on. We need to work to elect these candidates, and make this next step towards Medicare for All a reality in 2019 and beyond. We also started exciting new work groups on mental health and long term care, and even injected the long term care issue in the the governor’s race.

We will be initiating a hiring process to find a talented organizer to help continue this work. In the meantime, former Citizen Action Organizing Director Kevin Kane is returning to Citizen Action starting next week to help support the co-op model, and will be helping us maintain and strengthen what we have already built together.

We hope you will join with us in reaffirming your commitment to building on the great successes the Health Care for All Co-op. We must not stop until we build a universal public health care system where everyone in Wisconsin has full access to all the health care they need, no matter what!
