Attend virtual training on state legislation to rein in healthcare costs and hospital closures, Thursday, July 25th, 6pm
Wisconsinites pay some of the highest healthcare costs in the nation, and yet some hospitals are struggling to stay afloat. How can this be?
Citizen Action is excited to announce a NEW virtual training on July 25th, 6:00pm, addressing the consolidation of the hospital industry, skyrocketing consumer costs, and the closures of important hospitals and clinics in Wisconsin. We will provide key information on developing state legislation.
In this training, you will:
- Learn about new, not-yet-released Hospital Re-Regulation Legislation that will restore public oversight to increasingly unaccountable hospital monopolies, slash healthcare costs, and stabilize vulnerable hospitals.
- Deepen your understanding of BadgerCare Expansion and the BadgerCare Public Option.
- See how these core healthcare policies “fit together” as stepping stones toward guaranteeing healthcare as a right for all Wisconsinites
- Gain strategies and messaging guidance for talking with constituents and/or community members about solutions to the healthcare crisis
- Learn how Wisconsin Hospital Association lobbyists convinced Wisconsin legislators in the 1980s to “deregulate” healthcare in Wisconsin, slashing public oversight and freeing hospitals to operate as “nonprofit in name only,” price-gouging consumers and using windfall profits to expand into new markets and exert monopoly control over entire regions.

Citizen Action in the News
Citizen Action’s Robert Kraig was on the Earl Ingram Show for the full hour to discuss the fake unity at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, and the drama around the top of the Democratic ticket.
The Earl Ingram Show airs on the growing Civic Media radio network from 8 AM to 10 AM weekdays. Robert is the regular guest every Wednesday 9 AM to 10 AM. Civic Media now has radio stations in every media market where Citizen Action has an organizing co-op. You can also subscribe to the Earl Ingram show on Apple, Google, Spotify, and other podcast platforms, and listen on Alexa and on TuneIn. For video of the program you can watch on YouTube.

Robert joins us while on vacation and tells us about his adventures hiking the Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin this week. We review the disastrous RNC in Milwaukee that has seen a Milwaukee man shot by out of state police who were outside of the RNC’s security perimeter. In addition, there is a brewing economic backlash as many area businesses say the event was oversold as locals flee downtown and the city for the week and convention goers mostly stay in confined area and attend selected venues.
We talk about President Biden’s announcement that he will introduce legislation to cap rent increases to 5% per year, cancel medical debt, and rein in the U.S. Supreme Court. While mostly done out of political desperation, the elevation of these three significant issues is an important step for progressive organizers and our movement.
We review news this week from the dangerous, cutthroat and largely unregulated world of hospital and health system competition that UW Health is starting a $900 million expansion of its hospital and clinic footprint in pursuit of profits and market control. Attend our Hospital cost and closure training on Thursday, July 25th, 6pm to hear about efforts to fight back.
Citizen Action Southeast Coop Organizer, Brandon Williford, and Milwaukee County Supervisor Juan Miguel Martinez join us to discuss a wellness workshop that they are hosting at Mitchell Park with many other organizations next Tuesday, July 23rd, 3-7pm.
