Citizen Action endorses Susan Crawford for State Supreme Court
Citizen Action is endorsing Susan Crawford in the pivotal election for control of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Citizen Action’s board of directors, which includes grassroots members from throughout the state, interviewed Judge Crawford, asked her the hard questions, and voted unanimously to endorse her.
Crawford is a respected judge with a distinguished record of fairly deciding a wide variety of cases. As a lawyer she fought to protect abortion rights and to overturn Act 10, the law that eviscerated the collective bargaining rights of Wisconsin public employees.
The election will determine the future of essential civil and human rights including a woman’s rights to reproductive freedom, the right to form and maintain robust unions that give workers a true voice at work, and whether the Wisconsin Constitution’s strong protection of the right of protest, free assembly, due process, and equal protection will be fairly applied. It also will determine whether Wisconsin has enforceable regulations against polluters such as companies dumping PFAS in our water and CAFOs which pour millions of gallons of sewage into the groundwater we rely on. The state’s big business lobby continues to file cases which deny the power of the DNR to enforce basic environmental standards.
If there is a right-wing takeover of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, even already decided cases can be revisited. When conservatives took over the North Carolina Supreme Court they immediately overturned fair maps, and re-gerrymandered the state in favor of Republicans. If this were to happen in Wisconsin, it would return us to the grossly undemocratic situation where conservative super majorities are guaranteed, regardless of how the people vote.
Crawford’s opponent, Brad Schimel, is an ultra partisan conservative politician who has claimed that the January 6th insurrectionists were unfairly prosecuted. Wisconsin health care programs would also be at risk if Schimel is elected. As Wisconsin Attorney General, Schimel led the multi-state lawsuit that attempted to overturn the Affordable Care Act, which would have ripped health care away from millions of Americans and allowed insurance companies to deny coverage based on preexisting conditions.
The stakes of the race are so high, it is expected to break all spending records. The dark and misleading television ads have already started, and will confuse and mislead the electorate. To prepare us for the fight ahead, Citizen Action is offering the opportunity to talk directly to Susan Crawford, and hear directly from her about the major issues in the race.
Attend Citizen Action of Wisconsin’s An Evening with Susan Crawford on Thursday, February 13th, 6pm.

New Research finds $5.44 billion in investments and 2,512 jobs in Wisconsin because of Inflation Reduction Act
Since new clean energy investments were passed in 2022, Wisconsin is transforming into a solar and battery manufacturing powerhouse, according to new research. Climate and clean energy projects have spurred $5.44 billion in investment and created or moved forward 2,512 good-paying clean energy jobs.
Projects span six sectors – solar, batteries, wind, electric vehicles, grid and transmission, and other clean technologies.
In Wisconsin’s disadvantaged communities, companies have announced $475 million in investment and the creation of 700 good-paying clean energy jobs, while Wisconsin’s rural communities have seen project announcements totaling $25 million in investment and 700 jobs. The clean energy plan will continue to accelerate the clean energy jobs boom while lowering energy costs for families and reducing climate pollution across the state.

Wisconsin Hospital Monopolies Threaten Community Health and are crippling worker wages.
Families USA research in 2024 concludes: “If policymakers do not take action to rein in high and rising hospital prices and the harmful business practices of large heath care corporations, low- and middle-income workers […] could lose nearly $20,000 in wages over the next decade.”

Our state legislature has the power to put the guardrails back in place to lower costs for consumers and stabilize our teetering healthcare system. Until they act, our bills and insurance premiums will keep going up–and every community in the state risks suddenly losing critical healthcare access.
