Citizen Action Weekly: Friday, June 25th

Friday, June 25th

Veto the Budget!

We are asking Governor Tony Evers to veto the Republican version of the Wisconsin state budget. Not only do they intend to leave out BadgerCare Expansion, the funding for public schools is absurd and inadequate.  We are losing over a billion dollars while at the same time, denying over 90,000 hard working Wisconsin residents healthcare.

Postcards from the Park.

Join Citizen Action organizers for in person camaraderie and activism. We will be staging postcard writing tables in the various regions around Wisconsin.  Bring a lawn chair, write a postcard and get caught up on what is happening. We will be encouraging social distancing keeping in mind some of our more vulnerable community members.

Tell Hospital Executives to Step Up and Support BadgerCare Expansion

Hospitals and health systems have a tremendous amount of influence with the Legislature. Their support could be a game changer in the fight for BadgerCare Expansion. So far, though, they have been nearly silent on the issue. That’s why it’s important for the leaders of our local hospitals and health systems to hear that we expect them to speak up in support of building a healthier community, starting with BadgerCare Expansion. Each region of Wisconsin is focusing on the hospital systems in their area.  Feel free to use our template email messages or customize your own.

End Vaccine Apartheid Virtual Event

Join People’s Action on Tuesday, July 6th 5:00-7:00 PM to learn more about citizens fighting to provide free global access to the Covid-19 vaccines. We can all come together and create the change our world needs at this moment. You will hear from speakers with lived experience of how differently the Covid-19 struggle is playing out in other parts of the world.

While healthy teenagers have access to the vaccines in wealthy countries, only 0.03% of Covid-19 vaccines have been given to people in low income countries. If we do not come together now and fight the corporate greed of our Big Pharma companies, countless countries will be unable to vaccinate their citizens before late 2024.

They will have experts speaking on the soulless actions that Big Pharma is taking to extract

major profits from the misery and suffering happening in middle and low income countries.. Register here.

Citizen Action in the News

Milwaukee Public Radio did a good story on the Milwaukee City-County Climate & Economic Equity Task Force and its bold proposals for the use of American Rescue Plan Funds. Citizen Action is a prime driver of the task force, and has a senior staff member and two organizing co-op members on the task force. Read the story here.

Citizen Action’s Robert Kraig was on the Earl Ingram radio show for a full hour discussing the threat to Democracy from conservatives. Listen to the interview here.

This is NOT that; Episode #3: “Water the Roots”

Juneteenth weekend was a boom in Milwaukee. The holiday serves as a reminder of when people enslaved within this country began to see a light at the end of the tunnel. But are symbolism and holidays enough when history continues to repeat itself? On this week’s show we celebrate Juneteenth with a discussion about how the words of some conservative elected officials today echo that long history. We’re also welcoming our first special guest, it’s a surprise, so stay tuned!

“Veto Republican Budget” Battleground Wisconsin Podcast

We discuss Citizen Action’s call for Governor Tony Evers’ to veto the partisan GOP State Budget that completely fails Wisconsin. Also this week: Legislative Republicans ram through voter suppression bills; slash state aid to cities that cut police funding; and eliminate yet another business tax, threatening local revenue. Meanwhile, the State Senate passes an author-less legislative scheme to keep the 2011 gerrymandered maps for 2022 elections. Next, the panel reviews the threatening trend of Walker appointees staying on key boards and committees after their terms expire. We close with discussion of this week’s failed U.S. Senate vote on For the People Act and ask the key question on the minds of all democracy-loving people: what’s now?
