Organize against mass incarceration in Vernon County

Why does Vernon County need a 128-bed jail that costs $1.8 million a year to run and is largely used to house inmates from the Milwaukee area? How does the prison system in Wisconsin contribute to systemic racism? What can we do to change the system?

Join the La Crosse Independent for a brief presentation of the recent article, “If you Build it They Will Come,” on the Vernon County Detention Center and the prison system in Wisconsin. A facilitated discussion on locally organizing around mass incarceration will follow the presentation.

Help protect our water, our post office, our schools and fair election maps by donating to Josefine Jaynes

Wisconsin’s 96th Assembly district has a chance to make history and help in creating better representation for the Driftless region! Josefine Jaynes for State Assembly is running for Wisconsin’s 96th assembly district. Josefine was the first candidate to ever be endorsed by Citizen Action of Wisconsin’s Driftless Co-op.  When elected she will be the first woman to ever represent the district AND at 18 she will be the youngest member of the Wisconsin Assembly ever elected!

All that said she is not running to be the first; she is running to protect our water, keep the Driftless region beautiful, save the rural USPS, make sure everyone has broadband, expand healthcare, make sure Wisconsin’s maps are fair and make sure that rural Wisconsinites are not left behind! To say that she is an inspiring candidate would be an understatement!

Her district is very rural and this seat will be a huge progressive win. Josefine is not taking any PAC money so if you could chip in a $28.00 donation to her campaign it would be a huge help. Your donation could help flip a seat, elect Wisconsin’s youngest progressive and prevent a GOP super majority in Wisconsin. Please chip in what you can.

Citizen Action in the News

Citizen Action’s Climate & Equity Director Rafael Smith is one of the winners of the prestigious Bill Iwan Environmental Justice Award from Midwest Environmental Advocates. There is still time to attend the event, read more about it here in the Isthmus, Madison’s alternative weekly.

Citizen Action and our national affiliate People’s Action have launched a new ad campaign featuring the stories of Wisconsin farmers and rural residents. See the news story from WEAU TV 13 Eau Claire, watch the add, and see an interview with Citizen Action field director Zoe Roberts.

Citizen Action’s Rafael Smith was quoted in a national news story published in Capital & Main and the American Prospect on the demise of the Black Middle Class in Milwaukee.

Citizen Action is part of a coalition of unions and community groups demanding more action from the state government to project public health and school safety during the pandemic. Read about it in the Wisconsin Examiner.

On debate night, Citizen Action’s Robert Kraig previewed the presidential debate on the Jeff Santos Radio Show, but did not know just how bad it would be.

“Democracy Trumped” Battleground Wisconsin Podcast

We debrief the presidential “debate” this week, discuss the potential of a Trump strategy to use the state legislature to overturn electors and appoint new electors that support Trump, and sound the alarm on the deepening COVID-19 crisis throughout Wisconsin. We are joined by Kristin Lyerly and Kathy Hinkfuss who are running for State Assembly in the Green Bay area. Both are healthcare professionals who are running outstanding campaigns to win in gerrymandered districts.
