New Driftless Co-op Members Attend the People’s Presidential Forum in Iowa

Members of the Driftless Region co-op joined thousands of activists from across the country this weekend at the People’s Presidential Forum. Annette McGinley, K.C. Cayo, Sue Conard, Carla Pena and Fran Hegenbarth all traveled to Des Moines and got to hear from top Presidential candidates and learn about how each of these candidates plans to fight for progressive issues such as climate change, housing costs, college costs, healthcare for all and social justice.

Driftless Member Carla Pena writes about her experience at the Presidential Forum

I was one of the five La Crosse area activists with Citizen Action of Wisconsin to attend the people’s Forum in Des Moines, Iowa on September 21st. The Forum was well-organized and well-attended. I was impressed by the number of different organizations that have worked on issues that are meaningful to me.

The stories people told before asking the candidates a question personalized the issues and made them relevant. The candidates responded in a way that solidified my preference. But the most important takeaway for me was that the upcoming election is about we the people, not the candidates. I thank Kevin Kane and Ben Wilson for sponsoring my trip to the Forum and making it a reality for me.

Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes visits Citizen Action to talk climate change

Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes, who is also a Citizen Action Co-op member and former Board member, held round table discussion with some of the members the Milwaukee City-County Task Force on Climate & Economic Equity for clean energy week.

The Lt Governor spoke to the need for any recommendations made by the task force to have in mind front line community members. Most importantly, he made it clear that he was there to listen task force members and hear the ideas and conversation around the green new deal.

A few of the ideas were; reduce monthly cost energy cost, Installation Maintenance – job creation, budget for energy efficiency and job training equity, budget for energy efficiency and job training and land use reform freeways or transit. The conversation was lively and energetic and the member left feeling good about the opportunity to work the Governor and Lt. Governor office in the future

Lt. Gov. Barnes is spending the week raising public awareness throughout the state about the looming climate catastrophe that is headed our way if we don’t act now.

Milwaukee’s Green New Deal Transportation Event

This past Tuesday the SE-Co-op Climate Issue team held the first of a series of events that hopes to inform the public on the components of a Milwaukee Green New Deal.

This event was an amazing panel discussion on what a Milwaukee Green Deal will mean for transportation and mobility. On the panel were Alderman Bob Bauman, County Supervisor Steve Shea, Lisa Jones Lead Organizer from MICAH and Elizabeth Ward Lead Organizer with Sierra Club.

Each panelist spoke powerfully about the need for more funding in regards to more public transportation options. The need for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and dedicated bus only lanes were just a few of the ideas talked about.

Lisa Jones spoke to the fact that any Green New Deal must be not only fair but equitable for our city’s most marginalized communities.

The next Green New Deal event will be October 29th on the subject of de-industrialization. Venue and time pending.
