Citizen Action Driftless Organizing Coop’s Earth Day 2022: Protect the Future.

On Earth Day, last Friday, April 22nd, Citizen Action Driftless Coop hosted a rally, press conference, DIY workshop and up-cycle clothing exchange at La Crosse City Hall. The event called on UW-La Crosse and the School District of La Crosse to make a pledge to take action and combat climate change, similar to the pledge the City of La Crosse has already committed to the goal of 100-percent clean energy by the year 2050.

Laurel Masters, a University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student and Citizen Action of Wisconsin Intern, would like to see her university follow in the steps of the city.

“We’re the only campus in the state of Wisconsin that doesn’t have a Sustainability Director.” Masters continued, “There is no head person making strides to be more sustainable and pushing the University to become more sustainable. It is mainly just organizations run by students right now.”

Citizen Action Northwest Wisconsin Coop members attend Earth Fest in River Falls

Earth Fest, held on April 23rd in the Western Wisconsin community of River Falls, was a first-time event that brought dozens of community groups together to recognize Earth Day! A powerful moment was when a joint resolution was signed on the main stage, to reaffirm and advance a “Sustainability Commitment” by four major organizations. Photographed by our Northwestern Wisconsin Co-op Organizer, Jeremy Gragert, from left to right:

  • University of Wisconsin-River Falls Chancellor Maria Gallo
  • Chippewa Valley Technical College President Sunem Beaton-Garcia
  • School District of River Falls Superintendent Jamie Benson
  • City of River Falls Mayor Dan Toland

The Sustainability Commitment reads in part: “… our organizations specifically commit to advancing sustainability through educating and engaging our stakeholders, advancing sustainability in our operations, incorporating sustainability in our guiding plans, and seeking innovative sustainable practices that address sustainability including social, economic, and environmental justice for current and future generations.” Earth Fest was organized by Hope for Creation, based in River Falls.

WE NEED YOU: Were you helped by the Affordable Care Act (ACA)?

Last year, President Joe Biden passed a stimulus bill that directed money into the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace to help with the affordability of healthcare coverage and increased the number of people that qualified for subsidies so they could afford better plans with lower deductibles. In addition, an open enrollment period was extended.

Those subsidies are set to run out in Fall and must be extended!

Were you helped by these subsidies or the extended enrollment period? Please contact Karen Kirsch, our healthcare organizer, now. She wants to talk to you!
