Citizen Action Weekly: September 3rd
LISTEN to “Supreme Injustice” Battleground Wisconsin Podcast
We are joined by Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin president and CEO, Tanya Atkinson, to discuss the U.S. Supreme Court court’s midnight assault on Roe v. Wade, which rendered abortion illegal in the second largest state and may reach Wisconsin in 2022. We head into Labor Day Weekend with guest Laura Dresser, the lead researcher for the Center On Wisconsin Strategies (COWS) on their annual State of Working Wisconsin report released this week. Our panel also discusses WEAC’s call for vaccine and mask mandates in Wisconsin schools in the face of a wave of violence against educators and public health leaders by anti-mask and anti-vax protesters. Finally, the empire is striking back in Congress, as a united corporate America unleashes a massive lobbying and advertising blitz against President Biden’s visionary Build Back Better agenda. Can the newly united Democrats stand up to the pressure?

Digital Workshop: How to Host Successful Nonpartisan, Voter Registration Events
Thousands of nonprofits around the country and hundreds of volunteers will join together on National Voter Registration Day (Sept. 28) with the goal of registering as many voters as possible. In collaboration with the Wisconsin Voting Rights Coalition, we’re organizing our members to make sure you have the resources you need to help our communities register to vote and ensure everyone has access to the ballot box. If you are interested in hosting your own event, please join us at this virtual training on September 9th at 6:30 PM!
New Episode! “Get It Together” This is NOT That Podcast.
A lot has happened since our last show. One of our hosts JoAnna went on vacation to New Orleans and left in time for the storms which downed 600+ tree’s in Milwaukee and knocked out power to thousands across Milwaukee County. Now that she’s back New Orleans is bracing for a hurricane. It’s also been one year since the shooting of Jacob Blake, and everyone’s still processing that. America is getting out of Afghanistan…kinda, evictions are going to climb, and politicians remain politicians. A lot is happening indeed.

Support the thousands of Afghan refugees arriving at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin’s Driftless region.
As we all know the situation in Afghanistan is dire. Freedom-seeking, allies, and friends are fleeing after the violent takeover by Taliban forces. These refugees are scared and need our support. Many of these refugees are arriving at and staying at Fort McCoy outside Sparta Wisconsin (in the Driftless Region).
A La Crosse coalition made up of faith-based groups, progressive organizations and local American veterans are organizing efforts to provide relief and a welcoming message to these guests in our communities. You can help now!
If you could spare a few dollars to donate please contribute at https://cclse.org/afghanistan-refugee-assistance/. Your donation will help provide clothing, hygiene products, transportation for refugees to practice their faith, and so much more. You can even find a link to Target and Amazon Wishlists if you would like to pick out what to donate.
Find volunteer opportunities here in and around the Driftless area. Very soon they will be posting volunteer needs related to the Afghanistan crisis.

Take Action: Lobby For Fair Maps!
On Monday, September 27th, fair maps supporters from around the state will gather virtually to meet with our legislators and advocate for fair maps. Our two demands: take up the People’s Maps Commission Maps and pass legislation that fixes the problem of partisan gerrymandering permanently.
Given the uptick in cases of the highly transmissible COVID Delta variant, we have determined that a virtual event is the safest option.

Rescheduled: Northwestern Wisconsin Healthcare Issue Team Meeting

Celebrating our Northeast Wisconsin Regional Co-op and Members!
When we say that our Citizen Action Organizing Co-op is made up of exceptional people, we mean it! Our members have stepped up in the month of August to plan amazing events and use their platforms to advance policies that will create a Wisconsin where we can all thrive, with no exceptions.
Co-op Member and Brown County Supervisor Cassandra Erickson drafted and introduced a Medicare-4-All Resolution that would indicate the county’s vocal support for fixing our fractured healthcare system. Without her and the activism of fellow co-op members, this resolution would not exist. If you want to learn more about the Brown County Medicare-4-All Resolution and Action team, you can click here to register for our next meeting on Tuesday, September 7th.
In partnership with Build Back Better, our co-op held a Climate Solutions & Centering Climate Justice Roundtable on August 26th in Menasha. We were joined by co-op members Eau Claire City Councilor Kate Beaton, State Representative Kristina Shelton, and head of the ESTHER Environmental Justice Task Force Terry Dawson. Additionally, this roundtable would not have been possible without coalition partners like Wisconsin Conservation Voters and ESTHER- Fox Valley. You can watch the full livestream by clicking here.
Finally, our own Dr. Kristin Lyerly helped to organize a Pack the Park for Fair Maps Rally at Bay Beach in Green Bay. The fight for Fair Maps was energized by dedicated co-op members and now we have a renewed opportunity to tell our elected officials that they cannot pick the people, the people pick them. Thank you to Kristin and all of our co-op members who came from far and wide to send a message that the people of Wisconsin are demanding fair maps.
All of this work is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the incredible leadership that our co-op members show on a regular basis. Thank you to all of our Northeast Wisconsin Co-op members and our statewide membership for your constant support and dedication.
Northeast Wisconsin, Save the Date! September 25h
Citizen Action of Wisconsin Co-op Members and Supporters, make sure to keep Saturday, September 25th open! We are going to do all we can to ensure that our celebration is done safely to ensure that everyone who attends can enjoy it safely. More information coming to you next week!
