Milwaukee: Today, Citizen of Wisconsin released the following statement on the conviction of Ahmaud Arbery from Climate & Equity Director Rafael Smith:

“It says a lot about where we are in Wisconsin that a state in the old Jim Crow south is able to achieve justice five days after a Wisconsin court let a white supremacist go free.  In the heart of the deep south, self defense was not a license to kill. But even in Georgia, the police were not even investigating the murder before a video of the slaying went viral. This should give us pause about racism within the American criminal justice system.

We pass on our condolences to the Arbery family and hope today’s verdict can bring them some measure of peace. We are relieved that justice was done but know that nothing can bring back the promising young life that was stolen by unreasoning hate.”
